Following the pretty back of Ansan local Ttuhyeong-eonni’s head, we entered through the back door of this Ansan Jung-gu kalguksu restaurant, Hongdukkae Kalguksu!

They say this place is a famous hidden gem. I was introduced to it as a favorite spot I’ve been visiting for about 1n years!! There’s also a Gojan branch nearby, but this is the Jungang branch.

We came during peak lunch hour, and it was packed with people. Luckily, we managed to get the last available table! 😋

Looking at the menu, the signature dish, Shabu Kalguksu, could be ordered for one person. However, instead of fried rice, barley rice is provided, so please take note!

We didn’t hesitate and ordered two servings of clam kalguksu. As soon as we ordered, barley rice and basic side dishes were served. Mixing it with the gochujang provided on the table made my appetite grow. The ingredients were simple, but the taste was truly exquisite. Honestly, I could have been full just eating this. And the kimchi, what can I say… Kalguksu place kimchi is always delicious.

What was impressive was that the kalguksu here is not served in one large bowl but individually, which is hygienic and convenient as you don’t need to ladle it out each time!

The portion size of the kalguksu was also so generous, it felt like it would never end. The broth wasn’t too salty and was refreshing, so I could drink it straight from the bowl. There were plenty of clams too; I piled up the shells in my rice bowl haha.

Coincidentally, there was a tanghulu shop nearby, so we finished off with dessert! **Jungang Hongdukkae Kalguksu** was a place that satisfied with its taste, portion size, and price. I highly recommend visiting with family, friends, or a significant other 💓
